LAFD Press Release

Agency Assist 02/21/2024 INC#0803 - Agency Assist; INC#0803; 12:35PM; 10424 W Foothill Bl; ; #LakeViewTerrace; PRELIM: LAFD ground and air response to assist the City of Los Angeles Department of Animal Services "Specialized Mobile Animal Rescue Team" (SMART) in rescuing a conscious and alert ~1200 pound horse (undetermined breed / gender) trapped up to its chest/neck in what is described as a backyard sinkhole of very soft soil approximately 75 yards from the nearest roadway. The horse is described as being in minimal to moderate distress. Working now with bystanders to comfort and protect the horse, LAFD responders are gingerly removing soil with shovels, as they develop a rescue plan with SMART experts, which may include fitting the horse with a specialized harness to allow an LAFD helicopter hoist rescue. LAFD Public Information Officers Captain Erik Scott and Firefighter David Ortiz are en route, ETA 2:00 PM. Note: Though there have been strong rainstorms in that area in recent days, the specific cause of the sinkhole, and horse becoming trapped, cannot be formally determined by firefighters.; FS 24; Batt 12; Valley Bureau; Council District 7; AO1 AO2 BC12 BC14 E24 E288 E289 E290 EM10 H6 H7 HA6 HA7 HR3 RA827 RA889 RA91 T87 T88 T89 T90 UR88; CH8; 17; Brian Humphrey 02-21-24 01:26 PM

Update Agency Assist 02/21/2024 INC#0803 - Update Agency Assist; INC#0803; 02:45PM; 10424 W Foothill Bl; ; Lake View Terrace; The swift but delicate rescue effort by 61 LAFD responders continues, working continuously on a rotational basis, in coordination with the City's Department of Animal Services' SMART team, gingerly using hand tools, including shovels and lumber, as well as an LAFD Excavator, to safely and calmly assist "Lucky", a 20 year-old female Paso Fino weighing ~1200 pounds, who remains conscious and alert in minimal to moderate distress, trapped since noon today (in what is believed to be a standing position) up to her chest/neck in very soft backyard soil that became a sinkhole. The first of two or more LAFD lifting straps have been successfully placed beneath her barrel (torso), as the plan continues to use the teamwork of LAFD ground crews - and not an LAFD helicopter, to soundly hoist and guide her free.
