Knockdown - Major Emergency Structure Fire 03/09/2024 INC#0367 - Knockdown - Major Emergency Structure Fire; INC#0367; 08:56AM; 1400 E Newton St; ; #Downtown; *Address Corrected* 145 LAFD Firefighters took just 56 minutes in largely defensive operations to access, confine and fully extinguish heavy fire within a 9,100 square foot two-story building in the Central Industrial District of downtown Los Angeles. The 69-year-old brick structure, heavily damaged by the intense fire, appears to have housed a cannabis operation (whether this was a legally permitted business, has yet to be determined). During their initial attack on the flames, four of the first arriving firefighters experienced an unexpected burning sensation to their faces. Pursuant to protocol, the four firefighters, in fair condition and without other medical complaints, have been taken to an area hospital for a comprehensive medical examination. No other injuries were reported, and no escalating or off-site hazards have been identified. With witness reports that one or more persons *may* have been within the structure when the fire erupted, a pair of cadaver detection canine teams have been requested. LAFD Public Information Officer Firefighter David Ortiz is at scene to assist the media. The cause of the fire remains under active investigation.; FS 14; Batt 1; Central Bureau; Council District 14; E14 T9 E9 E209 RA209 RA809 E210 T10 SQ21 BC1 BC11 RA10 EM1 SO1 E221 T21 E10 E11 E203 T3 CM22 E215 T15 T95 E295 SQ95 EM11 BC13 E3 UR3 HR3 RA3 RA803 UR88 BC5 CM20 E21 BC18 T11 E211 E2 T2 E202 E46 AR1 RA811 EM13 T20 E220 E450 EA2 JT1 PH1 E48 T48 E248 SQ48 PI3 HE1 RA14 RA17 PI4 K902 K904; CH7; 12 13; Brian Humphrey 03-09-24 09:51 AM

A pair of cadaver detection canine teams will soon arrive to address unconfirmed reports that one or more persons *may* have been within the now heavily damaged building at the time of the fire. With *one additional* firefighter having experienced an unexpected burning sensation to their face early in the fire attack, there are now a total of *five* firefighters in fair condition, being medically evaluated at an area hospital.
