KNOCKDOWN Major Emergency Structure Fire 09/01/2024 INC#0249 - KNOCKDOWN Major Emergency Structure Fire; INC#0249; 04:50AM; 217 E Vernon Av; #HistoricSouthCentral; *Corrected Address* One-hundred-twenty firefighters battled the blaze consuming a three-story wood framed building in the construction phase (and surrounded by scaffolding). The Incident Commander ordered crews to remain in the defensive mode, keeping all firefighters to the exterior of the structure. Intense flames spread to two nearby single-family homes, which firefighters entered to extinguish, and several detached buildings (carport, sheds, ADU) were also damaged. At least 10 people have been displaced and Red Cross is responding to assist them. Although there were initial concerns of structural or scaffolding collapse, everything remained standing during the fire fight. Department of Building and Safety is responding for further assessment. LAFD Fire investigators are on scene attempting to determine the cause, which remains under investigation.
